The Columbia Basin pygmy rabbit derives its name from the areas in which it roams, Washington State. During the 1990's, Washington saw a dramatic decrease in the populations of their pygmy rabbits which led to the Columbia Basin species being listed as a threatened species. By 2003, the Columbia Basin pygmy rabbit was listed federally as an endangered species.
