The American Miniature Horse Association

Once only owned as pets by those in positions of nobility, the miniature horse has become one of the fastest growing breeds in the United States. Miniatures horses are now used as guides for the disabled, for sports like harness racing and as special companions for individuals looking for a unique pet.

Registered miniature horses or "minis" are thirty-four inches or shorter and the average adult weighs between 150-250 pounds. In September of 2001, a miniature horse named Black Beauty was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's smallest horse. At birth, she weighed less than ten pounds and was approximately twelve inches in height. At age five, she was 18.5 inches tall and she lost the title of world's smallest horse in 2007 when "Thumbelina" measured in at 17 inches in height.
